Das Racist create a weird blend of stoner hip hop which lyrics ranging from the obscure and stupid to intellectual and witty. You Oughta Know manages to cover both of these perfectly.
If you like what you hear, their first two albums are free to download of the internet so just give them a search:
No one is quite like Tom Waits, His tracks have a brooding, longing feeling with lyrics that are both sinister and sorrowful, for some reason Alice has been running round my head for this week and shows Waits at His best for me:
Ben Folds Five have got back together this year for a new album and a tour, For me the album “The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner” is my favourite and The track Mess is a highlight from an impressive line up of tracks:
Shipbuilding is both lyrically and musically fantastic, It manages to view a difficult subject matter in such a way that even outside of the Falklands war it stands out as a brilliant track:
It has taken me a few listens go get into the dreamy sound of Grimes but she manages to create music that loops in your head, Genesis has been doing that throughout the week for me, Here’s a video of her performing it on the fantastic Later with Jools Holland:
This weeks track goes to one of my favorite pop tracks of all time. After hearing the opening piano line mixed as a house track by Madeon at Parklife last week its been in regular rotation on my playlists:
Sorry for the late track of the week.
My original aim was to post a track every monday around clock off time, to get rid of those monday blues. unfortunately this week I have been delayed by going to the Parklife festival in Manchester, add traveling by boat and I have only had time to post it now.
The stand out from two days of music was definitely the classic disco act Chic, their afternoon slot had the whole crowd dance the rain away and a guest appearance by Johnny Marr was icing on the cake.
Everybody Dance is a classic Disco track with some toe tapping rhythms and smooth bass lines which always brings a smile to my face:
I have been a fan of Soil and “Pimp” Sessions since I saw them on Jules Holland 4 years ago, There fast paced jazz mixed with colourful and lively stage persona’s make them a joy to watch live and this Video does a pretty good job of summing it up:
I Have been a huge fan of the Flaming Lips since Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots came out. Listening to their whole back catalogue they have always done a collection of weird and wonderful music, The track Feeling Yourself disintegrate comes from their album the Soft Bulletin and is a great song for lazy summer days with a cold beer:
