TOTW: Kutiman_ Give it up

Kutiman is creating some fresh and exiting music that quite simply couldn’t exist five years ago.

This whole track is made from chopping up other artists on youtube creating a college of samples which then become a fully featured track, a great one at that.

This music exists because of the evolution in technology over the past few years. We can now get “usable” audio quality from our mobile phones and then upload it straight to online for other people’s consumption and even use. Something Kutiman exploits brilliantly:

Weekly Beats 36 (Atlas)

Week 36 (Atlas)

This week I had more time in front of my computer, which enabled this week’s track to be more Ableton Live focused. Apart for the vocal sample which was done entirely with the OP1. I would like to thank someone who doesn’t want to be named for allowing me to use her voice in the track.

TOTW: Aphex Twin_ minipops 67 [120.2][source field mix]

It’s been a long time since Richard D. James released music under his most famous alias Aphex Twin, 14 years to be exact.

Now the time has come for the release of Syro later this month and to build up anticipation minipops 67 has been released to tease it.

It may have been 14 years but this track manages to show that he has been keeping up to date with the latest musical innovations interweaving them with the unique sound Aphex Twin is known for to create an evolution of his work that is still true to its roots.

I look forward to hearing more:

Weekly Beats 35 (I didn’t see her)

Week 35 (I didn't See her)

I didn’t have a lot of time last week and so decided to go for a theme that would be heavily restrict me into working quickly. The track was recorded over one night using a piano and a looping pedal with panning and effects added later.

Have a listen:

Weekly Beats 33 (Burst Transmission)

Week 33 (Burst Transmission)

This weeks piece of music is a more beat driven orientated affair and I’m very happy with the outcome. This mellow track was composed and built on the Teenage Engineering Op1. I then added a few clap samples from a 909 at the end and about halfway trough an effect soaked Melodica comes into the track.

Give it a listen below:

TOTW: Sun Kil Moon_Carissa

Ok I’ve Cheated… A little bit. Although the opening track is my TOTW, The album “Benji” by Sun Kil Moon is truly outstanding and easily my favourite album this year up till now, so I had to include the whole thing.

If you have an hour, sit back and listen to it. It takes you on a journey. A dark voyage that you may not like to travel down often. The album may be bleak in many ways and full of death but it still manages to convey that life goes on and you should appreciate what you have for the brief time you have it:

Week 32

This Week I wanted to crate something with a more summary mood. I started with the initial OP1 brassy pad sound that you hear from the beginning and iterated on it to build up the track.

Unfortunately midweek I managed to fall whilst climbing and badly injure my left arm. Although I haven’t broken anything it’s made playing instruments over the past few days painful and I was worried that I wouldn’t finish the track. Luckily a close friend and collaborator John George stepped in to provide the bass line and help me with some of the arrangement to get it out on time:
